At a Glance

In the tropics, this warbler inhabits a variety of wooded areas, from fairly dry lowland woods to humid cloud forest in the mountains. Within our area it is known only as a rare stray into southern Texas, mostly in winter. The golden color on its crown is often inconspicuous, but the bird may draw attention by its insect-like ticking callnotes.

Range & Identification

Description

L 5"(13cm) WS 7 1/2(19cm). Rather plain. Dull olive above with no wing-bars or tail spots. Crown has narrow central stripe of yellow or buff, bordered with black. Dull yellowish eyebrow sets off darker line through eye.

Songs and Calls

Song a set of distinct, rich wee and chew whistles, simple but varied, with upslurred ending. Call recalls a wren or Ruby-crowned Kinglet.
