Star-Studded Evening for the Second Annual Heart of Green Awards

In an intimate dinner affair, held its second annual , presenting the Lifetime Achievement honor to actor Ted Danson and the Role Model award to model-turned-cosmetics-entrepreneur Josie Maran. Gloria Reuben, of ER fame and who earned last year鈥檚 Truth Teller award, emceed the evening.

鈥淭he Truth Teller, yes,鈥 Reuben said as she took the podium. 鈥淪ometimes it gets you into a lot of trouble, but I like trouble鈥攆or the right reason.鈥

Danson鈥檚 no stranger to making trouble for the right reason. For the past two decades, that鈥檚 been cleaning up our oceans, first with an organization the former Cheers star and a friend founded, then with the conservation group (with which his organization merged in the early 2000s). 鈥淚t鈥檚 the greatest conversation in the world,鈥 he told me. 鈥淵ou can talk about anything in the world people care about, whether it鈥檚 jobs and the economy, whether it鈥檚 national defense or national security or energy. Everything has an impact on our oceans.鈥

His fervor stems from the fact the he fears we鈥檙e fishing out our oceans. 鈥淚 love oceans. I love eating fish,鈥 he said.鈥 I want my kids and my kids鈥 kids to be able to go to a fish restaurant and order great fish. I want fisherman to be able to fish like their ancestors did forever and ever.鈥 Once Danson gets started on the topic, he doesn鈥檛 want to stop. But it鈥檚 that passion that drives his work.

Josie Maran, the former face of cosmetics brands like Maybelline, has always felt a similar drive toward finding make-up products that don鈥檛 hurt a woman鈥檚 skin or the environment. After years of being told they didn鈥檛 exist, Maran decided to . (Check out of her mascara.) Now her line includes products for eyes, lips, cheeks and more. 鈥淭here鈥檚 no reason not to have make-up products that are gentle on the earth,鈥 she said. 鈥淣ature gives us all that we need.鈥

The event also honored six others, including:

- Jamie Oliver, 鈥淭he Food Revolutionary,鈥 for his work trying to get healthier food into schools
- Philip Landrigan, 鈥淭he Guardian,鈥 for his role in making the environment safer for children and for leading the Children鈥檚 Health Study, a 20-year look at the health outcomes of thousands of American children
- John Flicker, 鈥淭he Steward,鈥 former 爆料公社 president, for his leadership for 15 years
- Tracey Ryder and Carole Topalian, 鈥淭he Ground Breakers鈥 (represented at the event by the publisher and executive editor of several Edible publications), for advocating for local food
- Fred Schaeffer, 鈥淭he Local Hero,鈥 for transforming an old railroad bridge in Poughkeepsie into a new state park, called Walkway Over the Hudson
