United States Christmas Bird Counts reported 672 species, 58 infraspecific forms (forms), two count week species, and 44 exotics. Arctic Loon at Shemya Island, AK, and Rustic Bunting at Columbia Estuary, OR, were found only during Count Week. New for the U.S. was a Far Eastern Curlew at Midway Atoll, HI, and a Scaly-naped Pigeon at Sanibel-Captiva, FL.
California dominated all states again with high counts for 120 species, 17 forms, and 18 exotics. Forty-four states had a high-count for at least one species. Florida was 2nd for the 2nd year in a row with 96 species, three forms and 18 exotics. Texas placed 3rd with high counts for 95 species, five forms and two exotics, and was followed by Hawaii with 73 species, four forms and three exotics, Arizona 68 species and seven forms, Alaska 34 species and one form, Washington 23 species and two forms, Massachusetts with 21 species and two forms, Louisiana 18 species and two forms, and Colorado 14 species and eight forms. All other States had less than 13 high counts.
Kendall Area, FL, led the Nation for the first time with the highest counts for 20 species and four exotics. HI: Midway Atoll was 2nd with 18 species and one form and was followed in 3rd by FL, Gainesville, with 16 species and one exotic, and O’ahu: Honolulu, with 16 species. They were followed by Atascosa Highlands, AZ, with 15 species, Matagorda County – Mad Island Marsh, TX, with 12 species, San Diego, CA, with 20 species, two forms and one exotic, Tucson Valley, AZ, with nine species and two forms, Oakland, CA, Lone Pine Key, FL, Hawai'i: Volcano and Harlingen, TX, with nine species each. Guadalupe River Delta – McFaddin Family Ranches had high counts for eight species and one form, Hawai'i: North Kona eight species, Green Valley-Madera Canyon, AZ, and CA, Point Reyes Peninsula and San Francisco each had high counts for seven species. All other CBCs had six or fewer species.
All-time high counts were made for a below average 28 species/forms this season. We were only able to break one record which has stood for 30-years. Rio Cosumes, CA, reported 1851 Greater Yellowlegs which topped the 1216 reported by Coot Bay, FL, which has stood as the top count for this species for 86 years.
