This year our conservation leaders, bird advocates, college students, ambassadors, volunteers, and scientists听accomplished amazing things.听Collectively, almost 150,000 of us听took more than 600,000 online actions on behalf of birds.听All of the accomplishments listed below come from the hard work and dedication of our members, chapters, volunteers and staff. 听We're very proud of what we have been able to accomplish together over the past 12听months.

1. We Secured Four Clean Energy Wins in Six Months
Chapter members, college students, volunteers, and 爆料公社 Ambassadors across our network were vitally important in securing four clean energy wins in six months. In Washington, Arkansas, , and New York, elected representatives and state senators listened to constituents and ensured a healthier future for their states and birds.
Arkansas and South Carolina have become clean energy leaders in the South. The passage of the in Arkansas and the in South Carolina will expand access to solar energy and create more green jobs in these two states. And In Washington and New York, constituents celebrated the passage of two of the strongest pieces of climate legislation in the country: the and . These laws say that the states must create a 100 percent clean energy economy by 2045 (Washington) and by 2050 (New York).
2. We Released a New Study on How Climate Change Will Affect Birds: Survival by Degrees: 389 Bird Species on the Brink
爆料公社 scientists studied 604 North American bird species using 140 million bird records, including observational data from birders across the country. 爆料公社鈥檚 new science shows that two-thirds of North American bird species are at risk of extinction from climate change. The report also features new online tools, like the first-of-its kind 鈥Birds and Climate Visualizer.鈥 By using this tool, people can find threatened birds in their zip codes, which personalizes and localizes the issue of climate change. The good news, according to Survival by Degrees, is that if we take action, we can help improve the future for 76 percent of the species at risk. In conjunction with the report, we published a special issue dedicated to climate solutions, including a climate action guide that anyone can implement.
3. We Acted Locally to Save Birds
Collaboration Protects听178,500 Tricolored Blackbirds this Season
This year 爆料公社 protected 90 percent of threatened Tricolored Blackbird colonies. found nesting colonies in 15 different farms and in four counties in the Central Valley. Saving the birds was a collective effort from 爆料公社 California鈥檚 Tricolored Blackbird conservation team, donors, family farms, and agricultural partners, including the USDA鈥檚 Natural Resources Conservation Service, Western United Dairymen, California Farm Bureau, and DairyCares. This was a huge win and a for the species.
Piping Plovers听Breed in Chicago for the First Time in 70 Years听
For the first time since the mid 1950s,听Piping Plovers successfully nested and fledged their young in Chicago. Local birders monitored the nest 24/7 and made sure the pair was safe on Montrose Beach. Although听the first clutch of eggs had to be relocated due to high lake levels and ultimately failed in incubation, the story didn鈥檛 end there.听Thanks to the efforts of more than 70 volunteers and quick mobilization of the birding community in Chicago,听two听chicks听from the second clutch听fledged and听both parents and chicks听flew south for the winter in August. The success of the Piping Plover pair was due, in part, to the beach restoration activities of听听Chicago Park District and dedicated volunteers,听as well as partner听organizations in the city and region, and a series of听successful advocacy campaigns.
4. We Partnered With Big Brands Like Canon and Allbirds
The theme for Earth Day 2019 was 鈥淧rotect Our Species.鈥 To that end,听we partnered with Allbirds, a sustainable shoe brand, to create a limited-edition collection of sneakers inspired by five climate听affected听birds: Painted Redstart, Pygmy Nuthatch, Scarlet Tanager, Mountain Bluebird, and Allen鈥檚 Hummingbird. These species were featured in听. Each shoe design sold out quickly, indicating that there鈥檚 appetite for bird-related eco-conscious fashion among people who may never consider themselves birders.
爆料公社 has also teamed up with Canon U.S.A. to co-host听鈥淏irds in Focus鈥听events. Across the country, from events like the Hummingbird Migration and Nature Celebration in Mississippi to the Fall Festival and Hawk Watch in Connecticut, thousands of bird enthusiasts, photographers, and community members flocked to 鈥淏irds in Focus鈥 to see examples from the 爆料公社 Photography Awards, test industry-leading photographry equipment, and see birdlife at its most elegant.听Our partnerships听with Canon U.S.A. and Allbirds represent听our efforts to align with like-minded partners as a way to engage new audiences and get more people invested in protecting birds.
Finally, we partnered with augmented-reality innovators Krikey to launch the Wingspan app game.
5. We Reached Historic Agreements, Protected Habitats, Secured Wins for Birds and People
Drought Contingency Plan Will Help Protect 36 Million People and 400 Species of Birds
In April, Congress passed the Drought Contingency Plan, landmark legislation that addresses impending water shortages on the Colorado River. As temperatures continue to rise and the West becomes increasingly arid, the Colorado River Basin will become an even more important resource for economies and cities in the basin, as well as the millions of acres of farmland and birds like the Southwestern Willow Flycatcher and Yellow Warbler. 爆料公社 worked strategically throughout the basin to build coalitions, engage bird-friendly businesses, create beer collaborations, and forge relationships with local, state and federal leaders. As the new plan is implemented, 爆料公社 will continue to work with the Bureau of Reclamation, the basin states, and our partners in Mexico.听
Utah Legislature Unanimously Passes Resolution to Ensure听Adequate Water Flow听to Great Salt Lake and Wetlands
A resolution adopted unanimously by the Utah Legislature and signed by Utah Governor Gary Herbert听recognizes the critical importance of ensuring adequate water flows听to Great Salt Lake and its wetlands. The resolution sets the stage for a collaborative process among a wide range of stakeholders to develop policy recommendations and other solutions for maintaining a healthy and sustainable lake system.
Drying lake systems in the West and around the globe have produced听devastating effects, leaving many communities with limited and costly options for mitigating the negative impacts from dust, harm to birds and other wildlife habitats, and听loss of livelihoods. The resolution acknowledges that the best way Utahns can prepare to avoid such serious challenges is by taking steps now. 爆料公社 was actively engaged in supporting this resolution, along with a wide range of third-party interests, including the brine shrimp industry, mineral industry, publicly owned wastewater treatment operations, the hunting and recreation community, and conservation groups.
Arizona Legislature Strikes Deal that is a Win for Birds, Water, and Public Lands
The Arizona Legislature spent weeks discussing budget negotiations. And just as the 54th Legislature, 1st Regular Session wrapped, Arizona Republican lawmakers struck a deal. The new budget is听a win for birds, water, and public lands听because it includes funding for invasive plant removal and replacement, wastewater infrastructure, and water department staff.
This legislative session,听听advocated for (or in some cases, against) several bills directly by testifying in committees, talking directly with lawmakers, and engaging partner organizations.听爆料公社鈥檚 multi-state grassroots effort to protect rivers like the Colorado River and its tributaries, the听,听sent more than 3,000 letters and e-mails to state and federal lawmakers to let them know we support actions that protect precious water resources and the habitat birds need.
Migratory Birds Gained Vital Protections in California
Amidst rollbacks and a new governmental interpretation of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, the state of California has been a champion in demonstrating that it can protect vulnerable bird species while enjoying a thriving economy. In September, California Governor Gavin Newsom , an 爆料公社-sponsored bill protecting California鈥檚 migratory birds. The bill, authored by Assembly Member Ash Kalra (D-San Jose), strengthens the state鈥檚 protections for migratory birds and closes loopholes by where California law defers to federal law.
We Continued to Defend the Migratory Bird Treaty Act in Court
In 2018, we filed a federal lawsuit along with the American Bird Conservancy, National Resources Defense Council, Defenders of Wildlife, and the Center for Biological Diversity. In addition, eight听state Attorney Generals also filed suit to defend the MBTA. After we filed the lawsuit, the government tried to get the case dismissed. This past summer the U.S. District Court in New York ruled that the cases should proceed and be consolidated. The next few months will be crucial as the coalition files听a motion for summary judgment, which means we鈥檙e asking the court to find in our favor and reinstate the prior interpretation of the MBTA.
爆料公社 Scientists Identify Priority Conservation Areas for Disappearing North American Grasslands Birds
is a comprehensive analysis of climate change vulnerabilities and land-use threats facing grassland bird species. According to the report, 42听percent of grassland bird species that depend on tallgrass, mixed grass, and shortgrass prairies in the United States, Canada, and Mexico are highly vulnerable to climate change under current carbon emissions rates. The report also identifies 鈥渃limate strongholds鈥 in North America. These areas that will provide the best habitat for declining grassland birds and provide听爆料公社 a听conservation strategy to protect these species and the places they need in a fragmented and climate-vulnerable landscape.
Conservation Groups Oppose Arctic Drilling and Seek听Permanent Protections for听the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
For years, 爆料公社 has fought to safeguard the Arctic Refuge, a vital nursery to millions of birds from all 50 states, from destructive oil and gas development.听In March, 312 scientists sent a letter to the U.S. Department of the Interior opposing oil and gas leasing in the Refuge.听Additionally, members from conservation groups like , Alaska Wilderness League, and the Association of Retired U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Employees worked together to pen a 431 page critique of the Bureau of Land Management鈥檚 Environmental Impact Statement, and more than 41,000 爆料公社 members sent in comments opposing lease sales in the Refuge.
On September 11, the members of the U.S. Senate that, if passed, would designate the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge Coastal Plain a wilderness area, preventing any oil or gas drilling in the area. The U.S. House of Representatives followed suit the following day with the , which would repeal the leasing program and prohibit the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management from allowing drilling along the Coastal Plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Both bills are major steps toward protecting the Refuge.
爆料公社 and Coalition Partners Fight to Protect Greater Sage-Grouse and a Threatened Western Landscape
In March, the Department of the Interior and Bureau of Land Management chose to make听听to the 2015 sagebrush management plans agreed upon by more than 10 states in the Interior West, making it even easier for oil and gas companies to lease and drill in sage-grouse habitat.听While a听court has put these new plans on hold,听爆料公社 is continuing to fight back against the ongoing threats to Greater Sage-Grouse and their habitat.听Upon closer inspection, 爆料公社, along with the National Wildlife Federation听and the Wilderness Society,听听failed to prioritize oil and gas leasing and drilling outside sage-grouse habitat, as the 2015听and 2019听sagebrush management plans mandate. Between January 2017 and March 2019, the Bureau of Land Management issued听leases听comprising听almost听1.6听million acres and听2,553听drilling permits in sage-grouse habitat.
Despite these challenges, the state of Wyoming,听听in sage-grouse conservation, with ongoing support from stakeholders like 爆料公社. Governor Mark Gordon of Wyoming issued听a new听,听with听a mandate that maintains the level of protections from the 2015 management plans. The Executive Order prioritizes increasing and improving sage-grouse habitat that will subsequently benefit more than 350 species of wildlife.
6. We Opened a Cutting Edge Nature Center鈥擩ohn James 爆料公社 Center at Mill Grove
In partnership with the 爆料公社 and Montgomery County, of the John James 爆料公社 Center in Mill Grove, Pennsylvania. The museum and nature-based facility will offer interactive and to explore the legacy of John James 爆料公社 and promises to be 鈥榯he nest best thing鈥 in art, conservation, and education for the Greater Philadelphia area. features galleries and exhibits, interactive outdoor features, and 爆料公社 Pennsylvania鈥檚 avian ambassadors and other non-releasable wild birds.
7. We Flocked to Milwaukee for the 2019 爆料公社 Convention
More than 600 people gathered in Milwaukee in July for the 2019 爆料公社 Convention. College students, conservation leaders, chapter members, scientists, and birders throughout the hemisphere met during a long weekend of fostering collaborations and building their skills to help protect birds and the places they need. This year鈥檚 programming reflected the convention鈥檚 theme: 鈥湵瞎 for Everyone鈥 and included workshops on how to incorporate equity, diversity, and inclusion into every conservation action, as well as trainings on running effective advocacy campaigns and building bird-friendly communities. But not everything was a panel discussion, and participants were able to enjoy outdoor activities like birding and kayaking along Lake Michigan.
8. We Created Programs and Initiatives that Benefit Birds and People
爆料公社鈥檚 Gulf Restoration Plan Will Help Communities Recover from the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill
At the beginning of this year, 爆料公社 announced its Gulf Restoration Plan, a multi-layered work strategy听to completely听restore and rehabilitate the Gulf Coast听in the aftermath of the BP听Deepwater Horizon听oil spill. 爆料公社鈥檚 Vision: Restoring the Gulf of Mexico for Birds and People highlights projects and programs critical to help this region of the country and its wildlife recover from the devastating oil spill and other environmental issues.
The plan recommends an investment of more than 1.7 billion dollars in restoration and conservation work, including 16-state-based projects, 10 region-wide projects, and four open ocean projects.
爆料公社鈥檚 International Work Expands Into Canada's听Boreal Forest听
This year 爆料公社 took a step toward protecting the billions of birds that rely on the billion acres of northern boreal forests, wetlands, lakes, and rivers that span from Alaska across Canada to Newfoundland by听naming Jeff Wells听as vice president of boreal conservation. Wells comes from the Boreal Songbird Initiative (BSI) and is a member of the International Boreal Conservation Campaign (IBCC), a collaboration of multiple organizations working on the shared goal of balancing strict protections and responsible development across the Boreal Forest.
As the VP of boreal conservation, Wells launched a collaboration between 爆料公社 and the IBCC to combine forces, deepen scientific听capacities, and educate a broader array of people听about听the forest鈥檚听significance for birds.听A major part of the effort will be to collaborate with Indigenous governments and communities that are advancing some of the largest land conservation proposals in modern history. Already in 2019, 爆料公社 celebrated the Lutselk鈥檈 Dene First Nation鈥檚 successful protection of an area spanning more than听six million acres in the Northwest Territories called Thaidene 狈毛苍茅,听and the Canadian federal government鈥檚 commitment of $175 million in funding for new protected areas. At least 27 Indigenous governments and communities in Canada received funding in 2019 to move forward new protected-area proposals, an action that 爆料公社 supported in 2019 through extensive communication and outreach efforts.
The Brewers for the Delaware River Association Provides a Clear Voice for Clean Water
Like birds, brewers depend on clean, reliable water to survive and thrive. Earlier this year, the 爆料公社 and launched the Brewers for the Delaware River. The coalition of conservation-minded breweries support the protection of the Delaware River watershed as a reliable, clean water source that benefits the people, birds, and communities of the region. Earlier this year, 12听breweries in the Brewers for the Delaware River penned a joint letter to the 116th U.S. Congress that urged their elected officials to support small businesses and protect reliable, clean water for birds and people.
爆料公社鈥檚 Migratory Bird Initiative Will Help Drive Conservation Where It鈥檚 Most Needed
This year听爆料公社听expanded its听Migratory Bird Initiative. Using the latest research on distributions and movements of 520 species of migratory birds and their annual cycles in the Western Hemisphere, 爆料公社 intends to use this information to identify the most important places for migratory birds. Additionally, the听Migratory Bird Initiative听will show how and where to focus 爆料公社鈥檚 conservation investments in order to protect, restore, and manage key habitats. We will partner with research and conservation organizations across the hemisphere, aggregate, consolidate and elevate the best-available migration science, inform policy advocacy at local, state, and federal levels, and strengthen connections among key stakeholders like government agencies and academic institutions.
The 爆料公社 on Campus Program Gives Students the Reigns
In March, 爆料公社 officially launched its 爆料公社 on Campus program, and it now has 100 campus听chapters. This initiative provides educational, advocacy, networking, and career development opportunities in science and conservation to college and university campuses across the country. From campuses in Ventura County, California, to Holly Springs, Mississippi, young conservation leaders are taking action and cultivating their own paths in the environmental field. Some of the ways students in the 爆料公社 on Campus program have engaged their communities include building native plant gardens, attending lobby days, advocating听for polices that address climate change, and participating in community science projects like the 爆料公社 Christmas Bird Count.
