Guadalupe Mountains National Park, west of Texas, has four of the highest peaks in the state and the most extensive Permian fossil reef on earth. Its landscape consists of geologic formations, formed more than 200 million years ago, as well as pinyon pine and Douglas-fir forests, streams, and caves. Nearly 300 bird species have been recorded in the park, including the Golden Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Great Horned Owl, sparrows, warblers, chickadees, and nuthatches.
