In Washington State, Mount Rainier National Park hosts 182 species of birds, distributed in different life zones that vary by elevation. The endangered Northern Spotted Owl lives in the mature conifer forests at lower elevations, and other forest birds live in the mixed forests from 3,500 to 5,000 feet. In summer, many birds congregate in the subalpine meadows (5,000 to 6,500 feet) due to plentiful resources like wildflowers, seeds, and insects.
